Pet Insurance FAQ's

Why should I insure my pet?

Pet insurance protects you from emergency vet fees. By taking out SuperValu pet insurance for your beloved pet, you are protecting yourself against the costs of unexpected veterinary bills whilst ensuring your furry friend gets the care they need when they need it.

What is Lifetime Pet Insurance?

Lifetime pet insurance can cover your pet for both accidents and illnesses up to your chosen vet fee limit. Your cover limit will refresh each year you renew your policy, so you will be able to claim up to your cover limit again. SuperValu Pet Insurance only offers Lifetime Cover to ensure your pet has the best cover possible.

From what age can I insure my dog or cat?

SuperValu Pet Insurance will insure your dog or cat from the age of eight weeks with no upper age limit, so you can purchase a policy for your older pet too.

Can I get SuperValu Pet Insurance policy for a pet of any age?

You can purchase insurance for your pet from as early as 8 weeks old. Taking out insurance when your pet is younger will ensure better protection should your pet develop a condition later in life. There is also no upper age limit which means we can cover your pet no matter their age.

What is excluded from my Pet Insurance?

  1. Pre Existing Conditions: Claims associated with a pre-existing condition that is diagnosed are fully excluded from cover.
  2. Waiting Periods: You’re unable to claim for any illnesses that first occurred or showed symptoms within the first 14 days, or any accidents or injuries which occurred within the first 2 days of the cover start date of your policy.

If my pet has been ill before, will this be covered by my SuperValu Pet Insurance policy?

If your pet has already been seen by a vet for a condition, or signs or symptoms of a condition, then this would not be covered under your policy. This policy will provide cover for new illnesses or injuries your pet suffers, just not an illness or injury that is linked to an existing illness or injury your pet has before taking out this policy or within the waiting period.

What veterinary fees are covered?

SuperValu Pet Insurance only provides lifetime cover with a choice of three veterinary fee cover levels for all specifically identifiable illness and injuries. You can choose from €2,000, €4,000 or €6.000. Our €6,000 option provides the highest level of Vet cover in Ireland. The level of Vet fee cover you choose will affect your premium. To choose the right level of Vet fee cover, consider your pet's personality and how prone to accident they are, along with their age and general health.

With Lifetime cover, your cover limits will refresh each year you renew providing continuous cover for accepted ongoing conditions.

What is the Pet Insurance Excess?

Veterinary claims will be subject to a €125 fixed excess which is payable per condition per policy year. This means you pay the first €125 of any vet costs within the year and for each condition.

If your pet is aged 5 years or above on the start date of the policy year, there will also be a 15% percentage excess of the remaining amount claimed after the fixed excess has been deducted.

Example 1: If your dog or cat is under 5 years old:

Amount Claimed   2,000.00
Minus Fixed Excess  -125.00 1,875.00
Minus % Excess  0.00
Total amount you need to pay  125.00
Total amount we will pay   1,875.00

Example 2: If your dog or cat is 5 years old or over:

Amount Claimed   2,000.00
Minus Fixed Excess -€125.00 1,875.00
Minus 15% Excess -€281.25 1,593.75
Total amount you need to pay 406.25
Total amount we will pay   1,593.75

Does SuperValu Pet Insurance cover vaccinations and other routine care?

SuperValu Pet Insurance does not provide cover for routine and preventative care like vaccinations, flea, tick and worming treatment or neutering. Your pet must have an annual health check by a vet which includes a dental exam. If you choose not to vaccinate your pet, and it becomes ill with a condition that a vaccine would have prevented, this will not be covered under the policy.

What can I claim if my pet is lost or stolen?

Firstly we hope this will never happen to you but if it does, we will reimburse you the purchase price of your dog or cat up to a maximum of €2,000. If you do not have a receipt for purchase of your pet, we will be happy to pay you the market value for the pet or the €2,000 limit, whichever is lowest if your pet is not found within 45 days.

What support do you provide to help find my missing pet?

SuperValu Pet Insurance really hope that this will never be an issue for you. If it happens, we're here to help and we will offer you up to €1,000 towards any relevant advertising costs that you incur in finding your pet. This would include for example, poster print costs, local advertising advert placement fee etc. We'll also give you €250 to offer as a reward for finding your pet. Please keep all of your cost receipts and call us in advance of paying for any advertising or offering any reward to ensure it is covered.

What is third-party liability and is it necessary?

Third party liability refers to the damage you are legally liable to pay in the event of your dog causing damage to a third party. It also provides cover if your pet injures someone or their pet. Please note cats are excluded from this cover and it applies only to eligible dogs, a full list of which is provided in the policy wording document.

SuperValu Pet Insurance provides cover up to €250,000 for dogs.

What is Travel Cover?

Travel Cover allows you to make 3 journeys, up to 30 days each, with your pet within the UK or EU and covers Quarantine Costs, Emergency Repatriation Costs, and loss of Pet Passport.

What emergency boarding fees are covered?

SuperValu Pet Insurance will pay the cost up to the maximum limit of €1000 for boarding of your pet at a licensed premises if you, or anyone normally living with you, needs to go into hospital for emergency medical treatment for a period exceeding four consecutive days.

You can choose to leave your pet with someone who does not normally live with you and we will pay €5 per day towards the costs of its care.

Will you automatically renew my policy?

Yes, we will aim to automatically renew your policy when it runs out, unless you tell us not to. Each year we will notify you by email at least 21 days before your renewal date and tell you about any changes to the premium or the policy terms and conditions. This is to ensure that there is no break in cover. If you do not want us to auto-renew your policy, just call us on (01) 681 9136 or email supervalupet@petinsurance.ie before your renewal date, otherwise we will attempt to renew the policy.

Can you pay my vet directly if I make a claim?

Our claims team can arrange to pay your vet directly as long as you have agreed this with your vet. Please ask your vet if they are happy to do this, and our claims team will take of the rest.

How do I cancel my SuperValu Pet Insurance policy?

Please tell us if your policy no longer meets your needs. All our policies offer a 14 day cooling off period. If you cancel your policy within 14 days of receiving your documents, and you’ve not made or intend to make a claim, we’ll give you a full refund. You can still cancel your policy any time after the 14 day cooling off period. As long as you’ve not made or intend to make a claim, we’ll cancel your policy and; a. if you pay by monthly instalments: we’ll stop your monthly payments once any outstanding premiums have been paid (if applicable); or b. if you paid for your policy in full: we’ll give you a refund of any premiums you’ve paid minus the premium for the cover you’ve received. We won’t refund any premium if you’ve made or intend to make a claim, unless the claim was due to the death, loss, theft or straying of your pet. If more than one pet is insured under your policy, the cancellation terms above will only apply to the cover, premium and claims relating to the pet whose cover is to be cancelled.
