White Sultana Soda Bread

SultanaSodaBread SultanaSodaBread

This bread is a really nice recipe for traditional white soda bread. It stays fresh for 3 - 4 days in your bread bin but also freezes quite successfully. You can change the flavour around to best suit yourself.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp Bread Soda
  • 2 tbsp Milk
  • 450 g Plain Flour
  • 75 g Sultanas
  • 350 mls SuperValu Buttermilk
  • 1 tsp SuperValu Salt

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 170⁰C/325⁰F/Gas Mark 3.

  2. In a large bowl, sieve the plain flour and the bread soda and combine the salt and sultanas.
  3. Pour in the buttermilk and mix until soft “sticky” dough has been achieved.

  4. Transfer the dough onto a well-floured work surface and kneed for about a minute or two. Shape the bread into a round shape and transfer on a floured baking tray.
  5. Brush the bread with a light coating of milk.

  6. Bake for 45 - 55 minutes or until the bread sounds hollow when tapping the bottom. Remove from the oven and cool down on a rack.
