The Facts

The competition is in existence with 57 years, SuperValu has been involved for half of these.

The competition (an initiative of the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government) is in existence with 57 years, SuperValu has been involved for half of these.

  • It is a volunteer organisation which relies on the entrepreneurship and goodwill of local people in any given locality to get involved to make theirs a better place to live (a perfect fit for us and our retailers).
  • It is generally perceived as being a key part of Irish society with in excess of 30,000 volunteers known.
SuperValu retailers have a long standing reputation for bringing volunteers together and helping to get the important work of TidyTowns done; this very much remains today and is a key reason for our involvement.
  • Year on Year the competition is thriving with committee entries increasing and exceeding over 800 for the last 3 years.
  • Added to this it is no coincidence that key improvements happen where TidyTowns committees are active most notably correlating with improved tourism in many regions (no official numbers but there is anecdotal evidence that this is the case e.g. Killarney, Westport, Ennis, Letterkenny, Skerries, Kilkenny, Moynalty, Abbeyshrule, Tallanstown, Emly).

Hence our Tramore story… a real life case study of how this important competition brings communities together…we believe in local.
