THE FARMHOUSE
The Farmhouse Bees and Trees, founded by Pat and Fiona McCormack in 2022, is a family-run business located in Abbeyshrule, Co. Longford, along the picturesque Royal Canal Greenway. Specialising in the production of Raw Irish Honey, pure beeswax candles, and native trees, the business is built on a deep commitment to sustainability and the preservation of Ireland’s native honeybee, Apis mellifera mellifera.
We, Pat and Fiona, both horticulturists, began our beekeeping journey in 2019 with a single hive of native Irish honeybees. As our passion and hive numbers grew, we expanded our efforts, ultimately establishing a business to share their high-quality products. Pat’s formal training in beekeeping, undertaken as part of his diploma, has played a key role in the growth and success of their enterprise.
Our honey is raw and coarsely filtered to preserve its natural qualities.
The range includes:
- Summer Honey: Harvested in July, this mild, runny honey is produced from clover, bramble, lavender, willowherb, and other wildflowers.
- Ivy Honey: Collected in September and October, it has a distinctive herbal flavour, perfect on toast.
We are committed to protecting Ireland’s native honeybee, declaring our main apiary a conservation area and actively supporting the Native Irish Honeybee Society (NIHBS). Our bees forage across a diverse landscape within 10 km of Abbeyshrule, benefiting from an abundance of wildflowers such as dandelion, whitethorn, clover, heather, and ivy.
Sustainability is central to our operations. We grow native trees for the wholesale market and practice soil regeneration through crop rotation, sowing clovers, phacelia, mustard, and other pollinator-friendly plants. Our eco-conscious approach extends to our packaging, using recycled paper and eco-friendly inks for our labels, printed in a carbon-neutral factory.
