Ellie’s Kitchen Home Edition

I am a mother, a CEO, an activist, and political candidate. I am originally from Malawi and have experienced living in the Direct Provision system for many years in Ireland.  I have also spent many years volunteering with Irish Refugee Council working on the campaign to end Direct Provision and was a key participant in public outreach and awareness raising activities.

In 2015, I co- founded an Irish Café Award winning social enterprise called OurTable with fellow activist and chef, Michelle Darmody. OurTable is a community-based, social enterprise designed to highlight the need to provide migrants with employment skills in Ireland. Through OurTable, I provide immigrants with employment and help them to develop their culinary and hospitality skills.

In 2019, I was the first asylum seeker to run for the local election. My activism and passion for positive social change did not begin in Ireland, however. In 2005, I founded the Rhoda Bosom Charity Foundation Trust, an organisation which raises money to provide essential infrastructure for rural villages in Malawi. This includes the building of a school, and the purchase of bicycle ambulances to transport women in labour and people experiencing medical emergencies to the nearest health centres.

In 2017 I gratefully got the opportunity to be trained by Darina Allen in Ballymaloe Cookery School. I have always had a passion for cooking and food. I launched my business Ellies Kitchen Home Edition during lockdown 2021. My homemade Vegan hot sauces are inspired by my Malawian heritage, infused with all the spices that remind me of home.

I applied for the Supervalu Food Academy to help me acquire the business and industry knowledge I needed to get my little company off the ground. The Food Academy has given me so much guidance and confidence in my products to continue with my dream of creating a successful business doing what I love.

I currently employ 2 people on part-time basis & hope to grow and expand enabling me to offer further job opportunities in the near future.
