Duhallow Organics

Duhallow Organics was established in 2017 but Niall has been farming organically since 2006 and fully certified since 2008. The farm has been in Niall’s family for over 200 years. Our eggs are produced and packaged on the farm, right beside the ‘old house’ where generations of Moynihans have lived. The farm is located in Boherbue, Co. Cork. Up until now we have mostly been supplying healthfood stores in Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

Supervalu has helped us as a business by focusing our minds on the reality of the business on the farm. We have clarified how we operate by looking at what works and what doesn’t. We have taken on a more business like approach which hopefully will translate into a successful business by streamlining and elimating wastes in time and money. We are also investing in the business which will also contribute to the better, more professional running of the business. Supervalu has given us the opportunity to attack the business on many fronts in order to maximise our chances which include rebranding and online banking.

Every year we accommodate Wwoofers on the farm. These Wwoofers, who come from all over the world, are willing workers on Organic Farms. They stay for anything up to a month usually to learn about how a farm in Ireland works. They participate in daily chores on the farm as well as bigger projects like tree planting, setting up a polytunnel or repairing the stonework of the old houses on the farm. They receive a varied and broad introduction to farm life as well as life in Ireland.

We are also currently training to join the Social Farming Initiative. Here, we wish to support local people who wish to benefit from the good that farming gives you. Exposure to the outdoors, soil, animals and nature bring people peace of mind, responsibility and self-confidence. We look forward to being part of that.

We are an Organic Farm so sustainability is at the heart of what we do. Each aspect on the farm benefits everything else for a holistic sustainable farm. For example, the hens are in the field housed in a moveable shed. This fertilises the field, which benefits grass growth and soil health. The hens are fed organic feed as well as feasting on the worms, grubs and grasses of the field. This produces a pure and natural egg. Nothing added. This benefits those who eat the organic eggs, support local produce and jobs and become active contributors to the best of farming life in Ireland. The money they give us feeds back into the farm. We can continue to grow our business, boost diversity on the farm and reduce our carbon impact by tree planting. This year 2022, we are involved in two EIPs (Environmental Innovation Project): the Owentaraglin River EIP and the Talamh Beo Soil Project. These have further advanced the biodiversity and sustainability aims of the farm through even more native tree planting and the sowing of multi species swards. We also use recycled paper pulp egg cartons. These are biodegradeable.
