The Clonakilty Gluten Free Kitchen was born 6 years ago in my families supermarket in Clonakilty. Our store was loved by many for its freshly baked breads and cakes and after a while, we had passers by and tourists looking for the gluten free alternative in this foodie town. As a result of a conversation with the mother of a coeliac child, who one day who was looking for a novelty, gluten free birthday cake – just like the others, my father decided he had to do something!.. and so our gluten free brand was born and a delicious range of breads and bakes developed with a focus on quality, taste and deliciousness with something for everyone to enjoy around the table. Fast forward 6 years, and I their daughter have taken a small in-house brand and turned it into a fully fledged independent business. Today, we have a large range of products ranging from gluten free breads to confectionery. We are all about the taste and it just happens to be without gluten. Our products are hand made by our experienced baker, we don’t add any of the nasties, just real, fresh, wholesome produce that we love! We are on a mission to show the world that you don’t need gluten for incredible flavour and aim to put a gluten free grin on the faces of many!
When I started on my own personal producer journey, I spoke with a lot of experienced suppliers to seek advice, the timing of the entire project coincided with October, which would generally be busy in-stores due to Halloween and I was advised from a supplier’s perspective to not approach stores, however at the time I had no choice. I began to approach stores. The reaction to my brand and range was really overwhelming, SuperValu really stepped up to the mark and embraced me whole heartedly. With a renewed focus from customers on supporting local, this obviously helped but every retailer I approached about stocking my lines was really supportive, positive, offered advice and were more than willing to work with me.
Provenance of ingredients is so important to us and we support local where we can including ingredients suppliers who can meet the specification requirements, even from our hometown of Clonakilty where possible. We are currently exploring opportunities to work more closely with the Coeliac Society, we are a listed brand on their food list for 2021 and are engrossed in private coeliac groups where they use social platforms to talk about food choices and options.
