Born Again

Our story begins with our love of food and nature. We are regular hikers; we appreciate the great outdoors. We’ve completed many long-distance treks from the Wicklow way to the Kings trail through Sweden’s Arctic Circle. The more we found ourselves out in nature, the more we found ourselves thinking about sustainability. This shift in mindset inspired us to educate ourselves regarding climate change, the food chain, and its waste issues. Following extensive research, we discovered a large industrial by-product - Brewers Spent Grain.

Well Spent Grain was incorporated in March 2022. The company is currently at home-kitchen scale located in Knocklyon, Dublin 16. The company offers real good snack foods that are honest, tasty, and sustainable. Born Again Bites is the brand name of our first snack line. It’s named Born Again Bites because we rescue the brewer’s spent grain which is the largest by-product of beer brewing process and repurpose it and turn into a key ingredient. This ingredient is high in protein and high in fibre. We achieve this by partnering with local breweries which is a good example of a circular food economy.

Well Spent Grain collaborated with the Prepared Consumer Foods Team in Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ashtown who helped us develop our Born Again Bites and validated the production process.

Consumers can break the cycle of food waste while having sustainable snacking lifestyles by purchasing Born Again Bites. Born Again Bites are vegan, high in fibre, 100% recyclable packaging, clean label, hand-crafted locally with well-balanced taste.

The company competed in the Climate Launchpad which is World's largest green business ideas competition. The company came in the second place in the Irish National Finals and took part in the European Finals.

By joining SuperValu Food Academy Program, Well Spent Grain has benefited in various ways. Firstly, the workshops and mentoring have been invaluable for us to better understand the retail business model. Secondly, getting an opportunity to stock our product at Supervalu for a trial.

One of the mission statements of Supervalu is to building thriving, sustainable communities across Ireland, and sustainability is part of SuperValu’s DNA. Well Spent Grain shares the same passion and ethos as Supervalu. Well Spent Grain is committed to leading the charge in circular food economy for consumers by promoting sustainable snacking lifestyles. Well Spent Grain wants to invite Supervalu on our journey, and Well Spent Grain can be valuable local partner for Supervalu.
