Pettitt's SuperValu

Jackie Pettitt opened a shop at 75 South Main Street in 1946 as rationing was coming to an end... A brief history of one of our many retailers journeys.

Jackie Pettitt opened a shop at 75 South Main Street in 1946 as rationing was coming to an end, after leaving the L&N where he worked during the war. Jackie Pettitt had an innate instinct for enterprise and an early belief in the value of customer relations and service. In the days before online shopping, Jackie put two mobile shops on the road in vans taking orders from housewives at their doors. Pettitts was the first grocer in Co. Wexford to provide self-service in the early 1960s.

Des Pettitt started in the business in 1966. In 1975 Des opened a second supermarket in Wexford in St. Aidan’s Shopping Centre, he leased the former Spar premises at first and eventually ended up buying the whole centre. Des continued to add supermarkets, 1978 Enniscorthy, 1983 Gorey, 1987 Athy and 1989 Arklow.  Des purchased Sleedagh Farm in 1986 to raise high quality beef cattle for the Pettitt stores.

Cormac Pettitt took over as managing director in 2008  and carries on the principles handed down to him from his grandfather Jackie and father Des "Get to know your customers and give them the best service and value you can".

Pettitt’s joined SuperValu in 2006 and took over the SuperValu store at Key West.
