I started my career as a Sales Assistant and by systematically questioning my actions, I have been able to gradually take on more responsibility and new challenges. I am currently an Assistant Manager at SuperValu in Ballincollig. I feel incredibly grateful and honoured to be part of such a great team that has won Ireland’s Best Food-to-Go Offering National Grocery Retail Award.

Working in retail allows me to develop my interpersonal skills and helps build relationships with other people. By working in a dynamic sales environment, I can improve my communication skills and work with people to achieve a common goal.

I graduated with my master’s in criminology at University College Cork six years’ ago. By combining full-time studies with work, I developed a strong habit of self-discipline and good time management skills. My interest in the broad subject of sales led to my next choice of study which was a Higher Diploma in Business in Sales Management at Munster Technological University.

I have a desire to keep learning, which is why I responded with enthusiasm to the opportunity to participate in the “Lead to Inspire” Leadership Programme organised by Musgrave. This course focused on developing a high-performance team, creating a customer focused environment and leadership skills. The mix of theory and real examples is an undoubted advantage of this training, and the attitude of the facilitators mobilised commitment and effort. The most important thing is that the programme focuses on the application of newly acquired knowledge in the work environment, which allows for purposeful and conscious learning.

During my career, I have had the pleasure of working with a whole host of people who have supported me, showing understanding and patience. The person who has contributed significantly to my professional development is my mentor, the owner of the store where I work. He shares his valuable comments and insights and creates an atmosphere where I feel safe and secure while developing skills and knowledge.

Working in retail is a great opportunity to improve yourself, overcome your weaknesses and develop your potential. The brilliant educational offer in Musgrave allows you to gain solid theoretical knowledge, and constant contact with people gives you a sense of belonging. It is people who are the most important link that makes working in retail a source of satisfaction and fulfilment for me.
