There are a remarkable number of hotels open on
Christmas Day, both for meals and with stay-over
packages. Lough Eske Castle is blessed with stunning
views across the eponymous lough, and although
they welcome pets, word has clearly got out and all

Christmas Day. The ever impressive Castlemartyr

1210, including a certain Richard Earl de Clare, better
known as Strongbow. Previous owners include Sir
Walter Raleigh and Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork, who
constructed the magnifi cent seventeenth-century
manor house, painstakingly restored for you to enjoy at
Christmas. Farnham Estate in Cavan is set in peaceful
woodlands with views over pristine lakes, a space ideal
for long walks after their renowned cooking, which they
