A NEPALESE TRADITION
In Nepal we celebrate a special day
called Janai Purnima, the Sacred Thread
Festival, when Hindu men make an
annual change of a scared thread called
a Janai that they wear around their
wrist. Every Nepalese household cooks
this dish for Janai Purnima. It uses nine
diff erent beans and all the dried beans
need to be soaked for at least 8 hours, so
it takes a bit of planning. Dried beans are
the best value, but you could use tinned
beans instead.

TRADITIONAL NEPALESE RECIPES USING SPICES YOU PROBABLY ALREADY
HAVE IN YOUR PANTRY.

I use a mix of mung beans, peas, soya
beans, chickpeas, red kidney beans,
rose beans, black-eyed beans, black
lentils and butterbeans, but you can
mix any beans available to you. Try
to use at least four or fi ve diff erent
beans. Traditionally we use nine
diff erent varieties of beans and pulses
for this dish.
