The Skeaghanore Farm has been in the family for generations, with Eugene taking ownership of it in the early nineties. It was a small dairy farm which would not have been able to support Helena and Eugene’s growing family. In 1994, they needed to find another source of income for their family and decided to start rearing ducks for the local markets and shops, with their first customer being Field's SuperValu in Skibbereen. This is where the business began. In 1996, in order to meet the growing demand for duck in West Cork, a small production facility and 3 rearing houses were constructed. The business and dairy farm continued to work side by side to grow from here. In 2015, we moved into our new large- scale production facility to meet the growing demand.
Recently, Skeaghanore West Cork Duck joined the Food Academy. This was a big stepping-stone for the business as up until then we were only supplying a handful of local Supervalu’s. The Food Acdemy taught us how to run our business in a sustainable way and design products for the SuperValu shelf. We now supply over 40 Supervalu’s all over the country and have had to increase our employee numbers to deal with the demand. One of the greatest parts of the Food Academy is meeting other members of the Food Academy and helping each other out with deliveries, tastings and advice.
We have just joined the food academy advanced program and over the coming months hope to further improve our relationship with Supervalu and their customers all over the country.
