At Maria Lucia Bakes we produce an award winning range of gluten, wheat and dairy free granola and toasted muesli cereals in a variety of flavours, using the best ingredients we can source.
We started our business in November 2013 from our local Farmer's market in Marlay Park. The business idea came about when I adapted my recipes for a friend with a gluten intolerance who was staying with me for a few days. She loved my granola and told me she couldn’t buy anything like it in the shops. I gave her a bag of it to take home with her and she shared it with her coeliac friend who asked to buy some from me.
Starting a food business, without any experience other than childhood memories of our family tearooms and guesthouse and my mother baking all the breads, cakes and biscuits in the Stanley range, was a little daunting.
With the help of SuperValu, Bord Bia and the Local Enterprise Office, I joined the Food academy programme and after a series of workshops and mentoring from industry experts, we were able to start supplying supermarkets Nationwide. We now supply over 400 outlets around the country.
Directly and indirectly we’re helping create jobs in the bakery. At our printers where we buy our packaging 2 miles away, merchandisers, we outsource our book keeping and our social media and pr which is keeping money in the economy.
