An Cisean Arain Bakery/Shop was established in 1989 in Arklow Co.Wicklow.

After qualifying as a Confectioner. I then decided to move into Plant Bakery to learn all about Bread making. 8 Years later my wife Shirley and I saw a gap in the market for a small Bakery/Shop in Arklow. We set up business during a recession which was very tough going, but we both enjoyed being in charge for a change. Local people were immensely supportive and we went from strength to strength.

We have often been asked about our Irish name and why. Simple really, we love our job and love being Irish, so put it together and that’s where it came from.

We produce a wide and varied selection of produce. Luscious Cakes, Delicious Deserts, Flaky Pastries, Apple Tarts, Soda breads, Sweet bread, Morning goods, and a very large range of Fresh Cream Cakes. Celebration cakes are also available. We are probably better known for our famous Small Loaf (Batch Bread).  It has been known to travel as far as the USA & Australia.

The bakery industry has changed a lot in the last few years, but we believe we still have the skill and knowledge to continue for a number of years yet, thanks to our much valued and very supportive customers.

As we approach our 28th year in business, I can recall back in 1990 making a wedding cake for a customer who only last month asked me to create the exact same cake for her daughter.

My wife Shirley often talks of little children who came into our shop with their parents who now come into the shop as parents themselves; this is a really nice side to our business as we have strong bonds with all our customers. It’s not exactly “Cleary’s Clock” but to an extent it is a meeting place for a chat. All too sadly there are few places like that left in our town, but here’s hoping!
