SuperValu TidyTowns is the longest-established, community-led sustainability initiative in Ireland. Organised by the Department of Rural and Community Development, the SuperValu TidyTowns Competition inspires thousands of passionate volunteers and a record number of almost 1,000 committees to deliver a range of extraordinary projects. 2021 will mark the 30th year of SuperValu sponsoring the competition. Working with our network of independent retailers across the country, the hard-working TidyTowns volunteers share the desire to build thriving, sustainable communities and to make villages and towns across the country better places to work and live in.
In recent years, SuperValu stores have partnered with their local TidyTowns committees to increasingly focus on sustainability initiatives such as biodiversity and conservation. Workshops on plastic reduction, packaging segregation, and recycling have been held all over the country and these have had a noticeable and positive impact on the local environment.
Another great example of a TidyTowns sustainability project is support for our indigenous bee population, which plays a pivotal role in crop pollination. We teamed up with the National Biodiversity Data Centre of Ireland and the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan to encourage TidyTowns committees to implement positive actions for pollinators. Over 80% of all 883 committees that entered the SuperValu TidyTowns competition in 2018 were implementing actions for pollinators. For more info click here.
At SuperValu, ‘We believe in Local’ and nothing represents local more than the GAA, with its strong heritage and deep roots in every community across Ireland. We have been proud sponsors of the GAA All-Ireland Football Championship for the last 11 years and we are proud to say that it is a partnership that continues to grow from strength to strength. This year, our partnership with the GAA was a great example of likeminded organisations coming together with a focused goal of supporting local communities. Working closely with our GAA partners and local GAA clubs, we have been able to come together to support the most vulnerable in our communities to deliver essential groceries from our stores to their doors. Our local retailers also support the GAA at a grassroots level, funding and sponsoring local GAA clubs all over the country. For more info click here.
