SuperValu has just announced it is to open a new store in Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre to become the new supermarket anchor for the facility.

The store will begin recruitment locally for 70 new jobs, with the new supermarket expected to open before Christmas. The store will be owned by the centre owners and operated with the support of SuperValu and Eddie Kane of the Kane McCarthy group of SuperValu stores.

The opening forms part of a €25 million expansion programme announced earlier this year, by SuperValu and its retail partners, which will create 400 new jobs across its 15,000 strong nationwide workforce by the end of 2011.

It also comes in the wake of an investment of €90 million by SuperValu in delivering price savings to Irish shoppers, reducing the price of the average weekly SuperValu shopping basket from €132 to €102, a saving of €30.

Said Geoff Barry, Manager, newly appointed manager, SuperValu Dún Laoghaire; “The builders moved in last Monday and we plan to be open in lots of time for Christmas. We have great plans for the store and shoppers will be able to take advantage of the fresh food, value for money and excellent customer service that is synonymous with SuperValu. We place a strong emphasis on supporting Irish suppliers and stocking Irish-made produce, with 75% of all goods available in the store either produced or sourced in Ireland. Additionally, the store will sell only 100% Irish meat and poultry, which has been born, bred and reared in Ireland.”

“We are delighted to have secured this site in Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre, it is a great opportunity for SuperValu to bring its unique offering to this high profile location.”

Commenting on the announcement, Martin Kelleher, Managing Director SuperValu, said, “We are delighted to have secured this site in Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre, it is a great opportunity for SuperValu to bring its unique offering to this high profile location. Recent market research in the area showed the 80% of people surveyed would use SuperValu for their main weekly shop and we really looking forward to becoming part of their weekly routine and the Dún Laoghaire community. The store will boast a superb fresh food offering, which includes an expert butchery department, an excellent fresh fruit and vegetable selection and a range of exclusive breads from its own in-store bakery department. A full off-licence will also offer a wide range of world wines, beers and spirits at keen prices.
